Pyramids in America. Yes, that’s right
This is the tallest building in San Francisco since 1972 until 2018.
The pyramid’s unique design was inspired by the shape of an ancient Egyptian pyramid. The architect, William Pereira, wanted to create a distinctive landmark in San Francisco’s skyline.
The pyramid’s original design included an observation deck that was meant to be suspended from the pinnacle by cables. However, due to safety concerns and engineering challenges, the idea was eventually abandoned.
When the building was completed in 1972, a time capsule was placed within one of the building’s cornerstones. It contains various items from that era, but its exact contents remain a mystery as it hasn’t been opened yet.
The façade of the pyramid is made of crushed quartz, which gives it its distinctive appearance and allows it to catch and reflect light in various ways throughout the day.
The pyramid’s construction includes a system of weights and springs at its base, designed to reduce swaying during earthquakes. This innovative system enhances the building’s seismic resilience.
